Obesity is a complex, chronic and progressive disease. While BMI can be used to categorise obesity, your doctor may consider additional factors. For adults 20 and older, BMI categories are based on a person's BMI regardless of age, sex, or race. It’s important to note that the BMI categories can differ depending on a person’s ethnicity.

BMI Ranges

  • <= 18.5

    If your BMI is less than 18.5 kg/m2, it falls within theunderweight range

  • 18.5 - 22.9

    If your BMI is 18.5 - 22.9 kg/m2, it falls within thehealthy weight range

  • 23.0 - 24.9

    If your BMI is 23.0 - 24.9 kg/m2, it falls within theoverweight range

  • 25.0 - 29.9

    If your BMI is 25.0 - 29.9 kg/m2, it falls within theobesity grade 1 range

  • 30.0 - 34.9

    If your BMI is 30.0 - 34.9 kg/m2, it falls within theobesity grade 2 range

  • >= 35.0

    If your BMI is more than 35.0 kg/m2, it falls within theobesity grade 3 range
